My 2024 Book Gifting Guide is HOT TO GO!
Happy Wednesday, friends! I am writing to you in the throws of newborn life as — surprise! — we welcomed our third child earlier this month. This probably also helps explain why I’ve been so quiet around here. It’s not been the transition I imagined with our two toddlers developing croup right before birth, but we are making it!
October came and went very quickly, in which I read a total of one book (side note: I hate reading during pregnancy for some reason, and have already tripled the amount I’ve read in November since not being pregnant any longer, haha). My book club picked The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, which was a reread for me having originally read it in 2018. I have lived a bit more life since then and have a different perspective, but it was still just as impactful. Have you read this banned novel?
Now, without further ado, I can’t wait to dive into this year’s gift guide with you! These types of posts are probably my favorite to build, and this year’s is no exception! I have a variety of categories with books I have thoroughly enjoyed and recommend fully. I branched out a tiny bit while doing my research for this post, and I think it was well worth it. Can you spot the book you might be surprised to see I included? Where I could, I included links to my in depth reviews as well as links to purchase. I do not receive any commission from these purchase links. As always, friendly reminder to shop early and shop local when possible!
History Lovers Might Enjoy: The House is On Fire by Rachel Beanland
This historical fiction novel is a perfect example of using multiple points of view to drive a plot forward. And I love that it’s set in a time period often unexplored as sometimes I feel like WWII dominates the scene.
Outdoor Enthusiasts Might Enjoy: Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy
One of my absolute favorite books from the past couple of years, author Charlotte McConaghy absolutely nails the atmosphere in this novel. I am greatly looking forward to her upcoming book, Wild Dark Shore, which publishes in March 2025!
Tiny Humans Might Enjoy: A Steminist Force by Laura Carter
This picture book is perfect for any child in your life to learn about some of the amazing contributions women have made in STEM fields! The art, by illustrator Anna Doherty, is absolutely phenomenal. This talented duo has another book, What Will I Be From A to Z, publishing July of next year!
TSwift Lovers Might Enjoy: Taylor Swift’s Style: Fashion Through the Eras by Sarah Chappelle
I would not consider myself the biggest Taylor Swift fan. I did watch the Eras Tour on Disney+, and I will admit she put on quite a show. I also think she is incredibly talented and has a great mind for business. This book by blogger Sarah Chappelle dives deep into all things Taylor has picked for her daily outfits down to each shoe on the Eras Tour. The layout and photos in the book are well done, and even I found myself enjoying it.
On Current Events: My Side of the River by Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez
There is a lot happening in the world today. I am not going to get into any details or anything, but I will share that I found this memoir very eye opening to someone’s story who has a very different perspective than my own. (Special thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for an advanced copy to read and review.)
Good Feelings Readers Might Enjoy: The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife by Anna Johnston
Oh this book stole my heart. Octogenarian Frederick Fife was such a sweetheart, and Anna Johnston’s debut stuck with me. I can’t wait to see what she will write next. (Special thanks to William Morrow Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy to read and review.)
Overwhelmed Parents Might Enjoy: Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman
Does this book have anything to do with parenting? Nope. But is it hysterical and completely off the wall? Yep. And if you’re an overwhelmed parent, it might be just the distraction you need. Plus, the audio is fantastic and it’s super short (therefore making it an attainable read for your busy life).
And if none of those categories suit your fancy, here are some bonus recommendations!
For the Auditory Learner: The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement by Sharon McMahon
Dubbed on Instagram as “America’s Government Teacher”, I have learned and been reminded so much about the way our government was formed and works. This book highlights the stories of regular people making waves during their time for ordinary contributions, and it’s so encouraging and hope-filled. You know I am a sucker for when an author narrates their own book, too.
For the Binge Reader: The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean
I read this book in less than 24 hours while on a solo night away! It has been a while since I have had the time or opportunity to completely binge a book, and I’m so glad it was this one!
For the Epic Adventurer: The Ballad of Jacquotte Delahaye by Briony Cameron
This debut is a swashbuckling, high seas adventure drama that completely consumed me the minute I picked it up. (Special thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley for an advanced copy to read and review.)
For the Full Circle Reader: All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker
Fair warning, this book is a commitment. Coming in at right around 600 pages, Chris Whitaker weaves a tale that will send you out to sea drowning in your emotions. By the end of this tale, however, you’ll find yourself placed gently back on the shore and a host of new characters to love. (Special thanks to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy to read and review.)
Need even more ideas? Check out last year’s gift guide or some of my other posts featuring lists of some kind!
If you’re *still* uncertain, a gift card to your favorite indie bookstore, bookshop.org, or libro.fm is always a good idea. Not only does it allow them to pick their next favorite (audio)book, but it also supports your local economy! Drop a comment or hit reply to let me know if you gift one of these to someone or have another book to recommend. And don’t forget to share — this would also make a great wishlist for you!
